Vanishing Lakes of Jammu & Kashmir: Ecological Collapse in Paradise?


For centuries, the lakes and wetlands of Jammu and Kashmir have defined the ecological identity, economy, and cultural soul of the Kashmir Valley. From the shimmering waters of Dal Lake to the vast floodplains of Wular Lake, these water bodies have sustained biodiversity, livelihoods, agriculture, tourism, and climate resilience for centuries. Yet today, this fragile ecosystem stands at the brink of collapse.

Over the past several decades, Kashmir’s lakes and wetlands have experienced alarming shrinkage due to urban encroachment, pollution, siltation, climate change, and administrative neglect. According to a recent CAG audit, nearly half of the region’s lakes have already disappeared since 1967, while almost three-fourths have either shrunk or degraded. In a Himalayan ecosystem already vulnerable to climate change, the vanishing lakes of Kashmir represent one of India’s gravest yet under-discussed environmental emergencies.”

This is not merely an environmental concern. The degradation of Kashmir’s water bodies has evolved into a multidimensional crisis involving climate vulnerability, flood risks, economic decline, biodiversity loss, water insecurity, and cultural erosion. In a region already ecologically sensitive and geopolitically fragile, the disappearance of lakes and wetlands could produce consequences extending far beyond Kashmir itself.

The Scale of the Crisis: Kashmir’s Disappearing Lakes


A recent audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India revealed that out of 697 lakes recorded in Jammu & Kashmir in 1967, nearly 315 lakes have completely disappeared over the past six decades.

·       The same report found that an additional 203 lakes have significantly shrunk in size, meaning that a total of 518 lakes — nearly 74% of J&K’s lakes — have either vanished or degraded.

·       Around 63 lakes have already lost more than half of their original area, putting them at imminent risk of extinction.

·       The total reduction in lake area since 1967 is estimated at approximately 2,851 hectares, including:

o   1,537 hectares lost due to complete disappearance of lakes

o   1,314 hectares lost due to shrinkage

The audit further highlighted that despite this alarming crisis, conservation efforts have remained concentrated on only six major lakes and wetlands, leaving hundreds of smaller water bodies without protection or restoration plans.

Major Lakes & Wetlands Under Threat


1. Dal Lake

Often referred to as the “Jewel of Kashmir,” Dal Lake symbolizes Kashmir’s tourism economy and cultural heritage. However, it is under immense stress due to:

  • Illegal encroachments and unplanned urbanization

  • Excessive weed growth and eutrophication

The disappearance of these water bodies threatens biodiversity, livelihoods, climate resilience, and cultural heritage simultaneously.

Kashmir’s lakes are more than scenic landscapes for postcards and tourism advertisements. They are living ecological systems that sustain life, regulate climate, absorb floods, and preserve centuries of cultural memory. Their degradation reflects the broader ecological challenges confronting modern India—rapid urbanization, unsustainable development, weak governance, and climate stress.

The restoration of Kashmir’s wetlands therefore demands not symbolic interventions, but sustained ecological governance rooted in science, community participation, institutional accountability, and long-term environmental vision. Saving these lakes is not only about protecting Kashmir’s natural beauty; it is about preserving the ecological future of the Himalayas and safeguarding the environmental security of India itself.
